Zhouzhuang Water Town is surrounded and divided by lakes and rivers. 14 stone bridges cross the rivers, showing distinctive views of the water town. Twin Bridges which comprise Shide Bridge and Yong’an Bridge are the most famous and considered the symbol of the peaceful town. Built in Wanli era (1573-1619) of the Ming Dynasty, Twin Bridges is in the northeast of the town. Shide Bridge is east-west and has a curving arch, while Yong’an Bridge is north-south and the bridge beam is straight. Crossing the two crisscross rivers (Yinzi Creek and Nanbeishi River) and connecting at the middle, Twin Bridges look like an old-style Chinese key. In 1984, 38 canvases of the notable painter, Chen Yifei, were exhibited in a New York gallery named after Armand Hammer, chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corporation. ‘Memory of Hometown’ which depicts Twin Bridges was one of the items on display and has gained the world’s attention for Zhouzhuang Water Village. The painting was chosen to be the first-day cover of the United Nations’ postage stamp in 1985.

The original author of this painting, Zhang Zeduan, is a history of Hanlin painting during the time of Song Huizong (1082-1135). People in the Jin Dynasty said that he was “the right way of writing. 这幅画的原作者张择端，是宋徽宗（1082—1135）时的翰林画史。金代人说他“字正道，是东武人，小时候在汴京读书游学，后来学绘画，本来善画界画（楼台屋宇），更爱画舟车市桥境郭。除此之外，画史上便不大有关于他的传记，留传下来的作品更是少之又少。《清明上河图》作于北宋，但是南宋许多画家流徙到杭州之后追想到故京的繁华，往往也采用这一题材来作画；南宋人的记载说：“杂卖铺子里每一卷上河图，定价一两金子。”画的内容大小繁简没有一定，大约多是画院（宋朝考选集中画家替皇帝画画，给以薪水，这衙门叫作“画院”）里的人画的。因此后来流传的《清明上河图》不止张择端一个卷子，但是以张择端这一卷为最好。
这一卷画流传到了元代的皇帝手上，被一个替皇帝裱画的人用假冒的作品换了出来。以后大约就在几家大官阔人家里流转。到了明代，却引起了一桩情节复杂的故事。
清代有一个叫李玉的人写了一个剧本叫《一捧雪传奇》，百多年来，这个剧本到处上演，到今天我们还常看到《审头刺汤》《一捧雪》《雪杯缘》等戏剧，这一故事的开端，就是为了《清明上河图》。
剧本故事说的是，有个叫莫怀古的官员，家里有三件宝贝：第一件是张择端的真本《清明上河图》，第二件是绰号“一捧雪”（形容它的洁白）的玉杯，第三是一个叫作雪艳的美丽姬妾。莫家有一个裱糊字画的人名叫汤勤——在舞台上这“汤裱褙”是典型的丑角。汤勤后来巴结上当时的宰相严嵩父子，就鼓动严氏把莫家的三件宝抢夺到手，严嵩于是先叫人去讨《清明上河图》。莫怀古既舍不得这张画，又不敢违背这杀人不眨眼的权相严嵩，于是想办法找了一张临本送去。严嵩得图正在得意，“汤裱褙”却指出这张画是假的。严嵩老羞成怒，便硬诬莫怀古“通倭”，把他拿去“正法”。莫怀古有个家人莫成，样子很像莫怀古，自愿替莫怀古砍头。莫怀古便带了《清明上河图》和“一捧雪”逃出城门，可是“汤裱褙”又跑到严嵩那里献殷勤，说杀掉的并非莫怀古。严嵩听了大怒，便派锦衣都督陆炳和汤勤一起审理这个案子。汤勤主张传雪艳来认人头。后来雪艳得了陆炳的暗示，把汤勤刺死了。

据传，王安石23岁那年赴京赶考，途经马家镇，当时天色已晚，王安石便决定留在镇上歇息。饭后闲来无事，他遂上街闲逛，却见一个大户人家的宅院外面挂着一盏走马灯，灯光闪烁，分外耀眼。王安石走近细看，只见灯上分明写着“走马灯，灯马走，灯息马停步”的半幅对子，显然是在等人对出下联。王安石不由拍手连称 “好对！好对！” 站在一旁的管家马上进去禀告宅院的主人马员外，但待出来时，已不见了王安石。

第二天，王安石进了考场，答题时一挥而就，交了头卷。主考官见他聪明机敏，便传来面试。考官指着厅前的飞虎旗日：“飞虎旗，旗虎飞，旗卷虎身藏。”王安石脑中立刻浮现出马员外家走马灯上的那半幅对子，不假思索地答道：“走马灯，灯马走，灯息马停步。”他对得又快又好，令主考官赞叹不已。

考试结束，王安石回到马家镇，想起走马灯对他的帮助，又特意走到马员外家观灯，已企盼多时的管家立即认出他就是前几日称赞联语的那位相公，执意请他进了宅院。看茶落座后，性急的马员外便敦请王安石对走马灯上的对子，王安石再次移花接木，随手写道：“飞虎旗，旗虎飞，旗卷虎身藏。”员外见他对得又巧妙又工整，马上把女儿许给他，并主动提出择吉日在马府完婚。原来，走马灯上的对子，乃是马小姐为选好而出的。

结婚那天，马府上上下下喜气洋洋。正当新郎新娘拜天地时，有报子来报：“王大人金榜题名，明日请赴琼林宴！”真是喜上加喜，马员外大喜过望，当即重开酒宴。面对双喜临门，王安石带着三分醉意，挥毫在红纸上写了一个大“囍”字，让人贴在门上，并随口吟道：“巧对联成双喜歌，马灯飞虎结丝罗。”
